The business itself

For those of you who are in the business field, or who have started your own business before this post might take you down memory lane. This past week I spent most of my time working on my last "real" unit of the Sheffield course.  The last two units are where I am doing hands-on solutions to real problems and then being graded by a person, not a computer with multiple questions...scary pops into my head!  But I digress...

Starting a business...let's just say it sounds so overwhelming!!  The course talks about various items that need to be thought about before starting the business:
  • Start up costs (where to get the funds)
  • Business plan
  • What kind of business organization (sole or partnership proprietorship, or corporation or an LLC)
  • Lawyer (to help with licenses, paperwork and zoning needs)
  • Accountant
  • Licenses and Permits (I am lucky enough that in my county I don't need one of these!)
  • Fictions Name aka D.B.A. (Doing Business As, any name other than your own)
  • Sign permits
  • Insurance planning
  • Record keeping and taxes
  • Bookkeeping
  • Taxes
Now you can see why I was just a "bit" overwhelmed! My first thought was...AHHHHH!  My second thought was: "Maybe I shouldn't do this after all." Luckily my third thought was "Hey! I know people who can help me!" I did some initial looking online, and then reached out to one of my biggest supporters...my dad!

Since moving down here and retiring from his job, my dad has joined an amazing non-profit. S.C.O.R.E. SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to educating entrepreneurs and helping small businesses start, grow, and succeed nationwide. SCORE is a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), and has been mentoring small business owners for more than forty years. Today Dad and I sat down and went through the list of items.  I feel blessed that most of the items can wait.  The one that can't is the tax id number.  However the IRS site is making us wait until tonight to do that.  Another thing we talked extensively about was marketing.  We have some ideas in the works, and readers you will be some of the first to be in the know.  But for now...enjoy being the first to see The Affair to Remember logo!
